2024 Kayak Skills & Survival – Summer Camps for Kids
(Limit of 20 campers/week)

Our Camps are for Kids going into 6th, 7th and 8th Grades – $375 per camper

Choose either ;

  • WEEK 1 July 15th – 19th
  • WEEK 2 July 22nd – 26th

Camp times are 9:00a – 3:00p

  • Campers may arrive as early as 8:30
  • Campers must be picked up by 4:00
  • Campers must bring their own hats, sunscreen, towel, change of clothes, lunch and refillable water bottle daily
  • Campers will receive a camp t-shirt
  • Campers will wear water wicking appropriate clothing and shoes that are water friendly (no flip-flops)
  • Parents/Guardians must execute waiver
  • This is a rain or shine camp that involves kayaking daily

Camp Day 1 – Lead Instructor – Teresa Patterson (ACA Certified)

Each camper will be provided their own kayak, life vest and paddle for the week.  We will learn the fundamentals of kayaking, water safety, technique and terminology.

Camp Day 2 – Lead Instructor – Chris Jackson (DFW Urban Wildlife – Naturalist)

We will learn about rivers, riparian habitat and plants, birds, bottomlands wildlife, urban coyotes & bobcats, animal tracking, our environment and nature.

Camp Day 3 – Lead Instructor – Jonathan Burton (Wilderness & Survival Skills Instructor)

We will learn how to survive in the wild. Shelter, water, fire and food. Proper techniques in starting fire from scratch wet or dry. How to properly and safely work with a knife. How to make river or pond water drinkable, search for edible food and signal for help. Leave no trace skills and more!

Camp Day 4 – Lead Instructor – Tristan Buschow (Local River Fishing Expert Angler)

Campers will bring their own rod & reel and tackle box for the day. We will learn how to catch bait fish, bait a hook with live bait and lurers. We will actually fish the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and ease over to fish in Hidden Lake.

Camp Day 5 – Lead Instructors – Teresa Patterson (ACA Certified) and Jeff Varnell (Owner)

Campers will participate in our most fun and challenging river runs.  Our 6-mile “Blast”. We will drive up to and launch from Hebron Parkway at the Trinity River. We then paddle down river to our location on the water.

Instructors

Teresa Patterson – American Canoe Association Certified Kayak instructor. Trinity River National Water Trail Manager. Co-Owner Adventures Unlimited Paddling Co.  President North Texas River Runners Paddle Club.  She loves to share her passion for the river and the skills it takes to enjoy paddling safely.

Chris Jackson – Wildlife Photographer, Journalist, Blogger, Naturalist – Owner of DFW Urban Wildlife online magazine. 18 years experience researching, investigating and documenting urban wildlife in the DFW metroplex. www.dfwurbanwildlife.com Documenting the diversity of Dallas/Fort Worth Urban Wildlife

Jonathan Burton – outdoorsman, brand ambassador, social media influencer and wilderness skills instructor that loves to share a campfire with anyone who would welcome him. He has been canoeing/kayaking and camping since he was a young boy. He has lived and worked off grid in Alaska as a canoe guide and naturalist and does his best to document it all as a content creator under the brand “TheBeardedBurton”.

Tristan Buschow – outdoorsman, hunting and fishing expert. He has lived on the river his whole life. This is his passion. He is a graduate of Lyons College and he has worked for Trinity River Kayak the last 4 years.

2023 Kayak Skills & Survival – Summer Camps for Kids
